Matra Petroleum plc is focused on building a substantial oil Exploration and production portfolio in European Russia. Matra (AIM: MTA) holds the Arkhangelovskoe exploration licence in Orenburg, Russia where it discovered the Sokolovskoe field in 2007. The company is currently preparing to drill the first appraisal well on the field.
Matra owns 100% in the Arkhangelovskoe exploration license through its 100% owned Russian subsidiary “OOO” (Limited Liability Company) Arkhangelovskoe. This License is located 15-20 km from the City of Orenburg, approximately 1300 kms SE of Moscow.
The Arkhangelovskoe exploration license covers an area of 171.6 sq km and lies is within a highly prospective Oil province at the southern edge of the Volga-Urals basin, with existing oil production on adjacent licenses and the super-giant Orenburg gas field to the South.
In Late 2007 Matra discovered the Sokolovskoe Oilfield, reservoired in Middle Devonian reef limestone, with the first well on the block; A-12. Seismic acquired in 2008 indicates this well intersected the reservoir on the flank of the field in a down-dip location from the structural crest, which will now be targeted by well A-13. Additional targets for this crestal location include Lower Carboniferous and Upper Devonian reservoirs prolific in offset fields.
Commercial valuation of the field is favourably influenced by the high quality of the crude oil - 39 degree API and low sulphur content, the proximity to infrastructure – an existing rail export terminal within 15kms, and the high well productivity demonstrated by well A-12.
The Arkhangelovskoe Exploration License expires in December 2010. One well will remain to be drilled after A-13 to fulfil the Licence obligations, however, Matra are well advanced with a Production License application over the Sokolovskoe Field, which when granted will allow development and production activities for the full field life.
Matra is actively reviewing new business opportunities in Russia, where there is an opportunity set comprising both the acquisition of known fields requiring further development, in addition to low risk exploration plays that offer potentially high rewards.
