Serica Energy plc is an international oil & gas exploration and production company with activities focussed on Western Europe and South East Asia. Serica has operations in the UK North Sea, Ireland, Spain and Indonesia .It has built a portfolio of exploration, appraisal and development projects, striking a balance between established hydrocarbon-producing basins where the chances of success are high, and untested basins where success is less certain but the rewards of success are more significant.
United Kingdom and Ireland Overview
United Kingdom
Serica has been actively involved in exploration in the UK since 2001 and holds licenses in the Central North Sea, the Southern North Sea and the East Irish Sea. To date, Serica has participated in the drilling of six wells offshore UK; three were gas discoveries and three were successful appraisal wells. Of these discoveries, a development plan has been submitted for the Columbus field and further appraisal of the Chablis discovery is currently being reviewed.
In addition to its discoveries under appraisal, Serica has a portfolio of prospective exploration acreage in the North Sea and East Irish Sea and plans to drill further exploration wells in these areas. Any potential finds will be economically attractive as the prospects lie in conventional water depths and within easy reach of existing infrastructure.
Ireland
In August 2006 Serica was awarded offshore exploration licence 01/06, covering three blocks in the Slyne Basin off the west coast of Ireland. The license is covered by modern 3D seismic data and is on trend with the Corrib gas field, currently being developed by Shell.
Serica has identified four prospects within the license. The Bandon prospect was drilled in June 2009 and announced as an oil discovery Bandon – the first discovery of mobile oil west of Ireland in nearly 30 years.
In July 2009 Serica was awarded offshore Frontier Exploration Licence 1/09 covering six blocks in the Rockall Basin off the north-west coast of Ireland. The licence is covered by modern 3D seismic and is immediately north of the Dooish gas-condensate discovery.
Spain Overview
Serica obtained its Spanish exploration permits in 2003. They are located onshore in north-eastern Spain, in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Serica identified this area as having a working petroleum system, demonstrated by the presence of reservoir and seal rocks in outcrop, gas seeps at surface and gas shows in many of the wells drilled in the area. In January 2008 Serica acquired a new 2D seismic survey, the results of which have led to several prospects being identified. A farminee is being sought.
South East Asia Overview
Indonesia
Serica began exploration in Indonesia In 2002 and secured controlling positions in all of its properties, which are managed from the Company’s Jakarta office. The most important project in Serica’s current portfolio is the development of the Kambuna field in the Glagah-Kambuna TAC, which started production in August 2009. Serica operates the Kutai PSC and is carrying out an onshore 2D seismic survey, with drilling planned in 2010. The Company was recently awarded the East Seruway PSC, adjacent to the Glagah-Kambuna TAC.
Morocco
In June 2009, the Company was awarded a 25 per cent interest in the Foum Draa and Sidi Moussa exploration licences offshore Morocco.
These underexplored licences cover a combined area of approximately 12,700 square kilometres in the Atlantic margin, in water depths ranging from zero to 2000 metres and are geologically analogous to the salt basins in some of the prolific offshore petroleum provinces of West Africa. The agreements are valid for up to 8 years.
