TransGlobe Energy Corporation is an international exploration and production company based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with oil and natural gas interests in Egypt and Yemen. The Company has interests in seven international blocks totaling 6.8 million acres, with active programs of exploration and development drilling underway.
In Egypt, following two significant acquisitions in late 2007 and early 2008, TransGlobe operates approximately 6,000 barrels of medium quality oil per day (bopd). In Yemen the Company’s interests have production of approximately 3,000 bopd of light, sweet crude and are operated by highly reputable international oil and gas companies (Occidental Petroleum Corporation and DNO International ASA).
Since inception, TransGlobe has recorded continuous growth in production, reserves and funds flow, on both a gross and per share basis.
TransGlobe’s combined properties contain a multi-year prospect inventory in prolific international hydrocarbon basins, focused in the Middle East.
TransGlobe became an international operator through its farm-in at Nuqra the Arab Republic of Egypt in July 2004, attaining an objective the Company’s management team had focused on for a number of years. Additional acquisitions in Egypt – notably in the West Gharib area – followed in 2007 and 2008. TransGlobe’s team quickly demonstrated its significant technical and operational skills, applying technology and capital to the low-risk, development-oriented fields and achieving production increases in short order. Within 18 months of acquiring operatorship, gross production has more than doubled to over 7,000 Bopd.
Since 1996, the Company has also held interests ranging from 13 to 33 percent in five international blocks in the Republic of Yemen. The Company is a non-operating partner with reputable, experienced energy producers, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (United States) and DNO International ASA (Norway), operating the projects in West Yemen and East Yemen, respectively. The Yemen properties offer both higher risk exploration and low risk development opportunities, where the rewards from successful drilling could be significant.
Egypt
TransGlobe's initial entry into Egypt occurred in July 2004 when the Company entered into a farm-out agreement with a number of other, small international oil and gas exploration companies, and earned a 50-percent interest in the Nuqra Concession. Subsequently, TransGlobe's interest in the property has increased to 71.43 percent (July 2008).
The Nuqra Concession is located in Upper Egypt near of the city of Asswan on the east bank of the Nile River. The concession encompasses over two-thirds of the Kom Ombo/Nuqra Basin, a rift basin analogous to the Gulf of Suez Basin in Egypt, the Marib Basin in the Republic of Yemen, and the Muglad Basin in Sudan, all of which contain major reserves. The Nuqra Concession contains more than 20,000 km2 or 5,000,000 acres of exploration lands with several seismically defined leads identified from over 4,000 km of 2-D seismic data. Seismic and well data have confirmed the existence of Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments and the presence of a petroleum system which could potentially hold significant oil reserves. A commercial oil discovery on the adjacent Block 2 (located on the west side of the Nile) has confirmed a working petroleum system in the basin.
In September 2007, TransGlobe significantly expanded its Egyptian operations with the acquisition of approximately 55 percent and operatorship of the West Gharib Concession; this was followed by the acquisition of an additional 30 percent in February 2008, and the final 15 percent in August 2008, to give the Company 100 percent of the West Gharib Concession.
Yemen
TransGlobe's international activities have their roots in Yemen where the Company entered into Block 32 and S-1 in 1996/97. Since then, TransGlobe has added working interest ranging from 13.8 percent to 33 percent in five Production Sharing Agreements in the country. TransGlobe does not operate its properties in Yemen but works together with experienced partners such as Occidental Petroleum and DNO ASA
