The Middle East has not always been a natural choice for smaller oil and gas companies.

Despite its huge hydrocarbon wealth, the region has proved a tough nut to crack even for the biggest of multinationals. State oil companies in places such as Saudi Arabia are understandably keen to maintain a tight grip on the country’s precious natural resources.
